What does life path 5 mean?
The 5 is read as motion and variety: the number that resists a fixed shape and treats a locked door as the most interesting object in the room. A restless life is not caused by a birthday. This is a symbol people find useful for thinking, not a diagnosis.
The tension in it
Freedom and avoidance use the same vocabulary. Both say 'I need room', and only one of them means it.
How the number is reached
Take 1940-01-08. Summing every digit of the date gives 23 → 5, so the whole-date convention returns 5. Reducing the month, day and year separately first gives 1 + 8 + 5 = 14 → 5, so the component convention returns 5 — the same answer.
How often it happens
Across 28,896 birth dates — days 1 to 28 of every month from 1940 to 2025 — life path 5 comes up 3,209 times (11.1%) under the whole-date convention and 3,209 times (11.1%) under the component convention.
Within that sample the two conventions never disagree about this number.
What this does not tell you
