The one who counts the cost
The 8 is read as the number of material consequence: the awareness that decisions have weight, that resources are finite, and that both facts apply to you personally.
The tension in it
Attention to consequence becomes a way of keeping score, and a score is very hard to stop keeping once it has started.
How the number is reached
Take 1940-01-02. Summing every digit of the date gives 17 → 8, so the whole-date convention returns 8. Reducing the month, day and year separately first gives 1 + 2 + 5 = 8, so the component convention returns 8 — the same answer.
How often it happens
Across 28,896 birth dates — days 1 to 28 of every month from 1940 to 2025 — life path 8 comes up 3,211 times (11.1%) under the whole-date convention and 3,211 times (11.1%) under the component convention.
Within that sample the two conventions never disagree about this number.
